Scholarships for agriculture and veterinary science study and research

BAF has developed and now manages an exciting and future focused scholarship programme that has extended the impact of the scholarships offered through the Bashford-Nicholls trust. The exciting new scholarship programme was launched in September 2017. Four scholarship tiers now support PhD, Masters, Undergraduate and vocational programmes of study.

Bashford-Nicholls scholarships are available for applications in October each year. BAF is working to finalise a new significant Award within the Bashford-Nicholls Trust scholarships that will provide up to $50,000 per year for innovative research. Details will be available shortly with the Award available in 2019

The Bashford Story

Kaupokonui farmer James Dawson Bashford was a big man with a lasting plan. The former publican-turned-farmer left a legacy to help Kiwi boys get an education in agriculture.

Known by his second name, and called Dawes by those who knew him well, he had a dream that when he died, his 66-hectare farm on Rama Rd would become a place of agricultural learning. In his last will, dated 15 May 1962, he asked that it be called the Margaret Bashford Memorial Home For Boys, in remembrance of his late wife. The couple had never had children.

The document outlined his wish that the home be for boys aged under 21 “who being orphans or needing assistance for any other reason are willing to live in a home where they can learn practical farming out of school hours”.

The Nicholls Story

When Donald Hastie was a boy, he remembers visiting Claude Nicholls at his South Rd farm at Otakeho.

It was in the early 1950s, about the time his father, Andrew Hastie, was asked to be an advisory trustee of Mr Nicholls’ estate, which was to be administered by the Anglican Boys Home Society (Diocese of Wellington) Trust Board. Claude Nicholls’ original will was signed 7 December 1951. It instructed the trust to carry on farming the land, but for his wife Eleanor to remain living there and collect the net income from the farm during her life.

The will then stated: “I direct my trustee upon the death of my said wife to hold my said farm for the purpose of establishing and carrying on a home or training farm for boys.” All profits from the farm were to go towards running of the boys’ home, which would be set up for agricultural education.

The Bashford-Nicholls Trust Scholarships

Postgraduates Scholarships

Scholarships are available for Postgraduate study (Doctoral) with the following maximum award: $20,000 per annum (for up to 3 years). Scholarships are available for Postgraduate study (Masters) with the following maximum award: $13,000 per annum (for up to 2 years). On completion of their course of study, the scholarship recipient will join a growing and influential alumni with the capacity and drive to contribute as leaders of change, development and innovation that will ensure New Zealand’s agricultural and veterinary science industries remain national success stories and world leaders.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Scholarships are available for Undergraduate courses of study with the following maximum award: $4,000 per annum (for up to 5 years). The number of scholarships available each year will vary depending on the level of funding available to the trustees to distribute. On completion of their course of study, the scholarship recipient will join a growing and influential alumni with the capacity and drive to contribute as leaders of change, development and innovation that will ensure New Zealand’s agricultural and veterinary science industries remain national success stories and world leaders.

Vocational Study Scholarships

Scholarships are available for Other Courses of Study with the following maximum award: $1,000 per annum (for up to 3 years). On completion of their course of study, the scholarship recipient will join a growing and influential alumni with the capacity and drive to contribute as leaders of change, development and innovation that will ensure New Zealand’s agricultural and veterinary science industries remain national success stories and world leaders.
